The River of Creativity may have
tides, but it never completely dries.
Humans
born with “that something” evolve with an inescapable umbra that permeates their
lives even on moonless nights. Such is the life of the gifted who had to forego
a career in the arts to support themselves.
Late-in-the-day flowers like the evening primrose are
more splendid than some diurnal blooms who fade before the midday sun.
Therefore, America, with its seemingly boundless wealth, would be far richer if
it were to unearth creativity languishing under the neglect of agism.
MITFA proposes funding for talented seniors. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are
more than sixty million people who are sixty-five years of age and older in this
country. We postulate there is a “talented tenth” within that population capable
and eager to share their imaginations to build a better future for everyone.
Recently, MITFA surveyed residents of Leisure
World, Maryland, a 9,000 plus retirement community of middle and
upper-middle-class seniors. The query revealed a substantial number
of people who are interested in reigniting their passions by attending
comprehensive classes in their respective mediums and receiving grants to
promote their creations. To mind, there are none or perhaps few programs in this
country offering late-in-the-day bloomers a ray of sunshine tomorrow.
